New Public School Calendar For South Africa Cuts Back On Holidays

In a 6-1 vote, with two board members on board, the Aiken County Board of Education approved a revised calendar for the 2023-24 school year at Tuesday night's meeting.

With the changed calendar, students will have a shorter summer and instead have a two-week break between the fall and spring semesters. One of the weeks each semester will be an orientation week, giving students who need academic support the opportunity to receive it.

In the revised calendar for 2023-24, students will have to start classes on Tuesday, July 25, 2023. Fall Break is scheduled as a gap week from October 2-13 and October 2-6. Break from November 22nd to November 24th. New Year break for students is from 20 December 2023 to 3 January 2024. Spring Break is scheduled for April 1-12 and Holy Week is scheduled for April 1-5, 2024. The last day of class will be Thursday. 30, 2024.

Other breaks in the proposed calendar include Labor Day on September 4, 2023. Air conditioning day on Friday 20 October. Martin Luther King Day on January 15th. Board member Jason Crane was the lone voice against the calendar. During the meeting, he reiterated his concern that the calendar would affect many programs, including Gateway's athletics, band and arts programs.

The Aiken County Board of Education will vote on a proposed calendar for the 2023-24 school year at its meeting Tuesday.

"I'm worried that a short summer will affect the games, the complex and the gate," Kern said after the meeting. "I'm sure district will happen, but I also think it's a big loss for us." I voted my conscience".

Crane added that he supports the idea of ​​a modified calendar, with only two-week breaks each semester giving him a break.

"…I'm just not sold that we need two weeks for these breaks," Crane said. "I think one week will be enough, but the board will do what we voted for, I voted for and I support its development."

During the meeting, Aiken County Superintendent King Lawrence said the summer of 2023 will be difficult for the team to practice because there are usually three weeks of summer camp. But there are many options for team managers.

Lawrence noted that tournaments are set by the state and that South Carolina has different school programs. He also suggested holding a week-long camp in the summer and using interim periods for additional camps.

"Yeah, you're used to having a three-week camp in the summer, but what about having a one-week camp in the summer and using those break periods for additional band camps," Lawrence said. "One two-week team camp in the summer and another in the fall. I'm just saying that guys have to look at things a little differently and adjust."

As for athletic schedules, Lawrence said tournament schedules are determined by the state, so they won't be affected too much. Internships have to be arranged, especially summer internships and their timing.

"Football and other fall sports will definitely be (games) at this break," Lawrence said. "It's no different than basketball on Christmas, baseball and softball on spring break."

Another concern was how the two weeks of reforms would work. Kern said he's not sure a two-week break will serve their purpose, and he's heard from other people who feel the same way.

"We can have 30 minutes of intervention every day (during the school year)," Lawrence said. "Thirty-minute intervention is a good, intensive intervention for our students in a small group… If we look at a five-hour day during that intervention, that's 10 times what they get in a normal school day." So for five days they get 50 times more than a normal school day. This one week of intervention can equate to 50 days of intervention in the school year, 30 minutes at a time.

Lawrence said. "Everything we do for these students should be designed to help them succeed next quarter." "I think we can do a lot better this week. We actually heard from a school district two weeks ago that they reported results using a week of intervention.

As for Gateway, Lawrence said it should be 30 days, and they are thinking about how to do those 30 days. The possibilities he mentions include 20 or 25 days in the summer and five days in the fall, or five days in the fall and spring.

"After the first year, everything is easier because you have an extra week," Lawrence said. "An extra week doesn't seem like much, but that extra week gives you a lot of flexibility in summer planning."

Cherokee County School District Calendar 2022 2023

School Committee President Dr. John Bradley said he was skeptical about the revised calendar, but the fact that a majority of respondents were in favor of it was part of his decision to approve it.

"I'm voting because we're causing too many problems for some people," Bradley said. "I'm sorry for that. But again, I feel we should do what the majority wants, good or bad for many reasons."

At the Jan. 25 meeting, board members approved the transition to the revised calendar concept, but did not approve the original calendar at that time.
