Njit Spring 2023 Calendar – Tools, techniques and strategies for design. Addressing the multifaceted nature of the profession, we explore themes for practice design such as work and work, tools and technology, and ethics and action. The symposium will point out potential ways of development and establishment of practice, as well as current problems in this profession. The following discussions confront the changing responsibilities of design practice and questions about the future of the practice.

The symposium is generously sponsored by the Carl M. Sapers Ethics in Practice Fund and co-organized by the Platform for Practice and the Department of Architecture.

Njit Spring 2023 Calendar

This panel addresses contemporary value systems in contemporary design practice for managing and creating workforces, assessing risk, and mediating the economic and social dynamics that underpin the design of the built environment. The panelists will focus on the role of designers in our contemporary production culture and lead a critical discussion about the external forces influencing the practice and the growing crisis of marginalization in the design disciplines. The evolution of practice is viewed through historical, ethnographic and other qualitative lenses that reveal complex systems of relationships between key actors in the creation of the built environment.

Highlanders Announce 2022 Spring Slate

Delineating the institutional differences between formal and informal design practices, corporate conglomerates and grassroots design groups, the discussion highlights the socio-political role of design, issues of professional identity and opportunities to increase design agency in the face of an uncertain future.

Aaron Kayer is an ethnographer, historian and architectural academic. He is currently an assistant professor of architecture at the University of New Mexico. Prior to New Mexico, he taught architectural history and theory at Cal Poly Pomona and from 2012 to 2017 was a senior researcher at cityLAB, an urban research center in the UCLA Department of Architecture and Urban Design. Also in Los Angeles in 2016, he co-founded the Los Angeles chapter of The Architecture Lobby. Aaron received his Ph.D. in architecture from the University of California, Los Angeles, as well as undergraduate and graduate studies in architecture from Norwich University in Vermont. His current research focuses on the history and theories of postwar corporate architectural practice as they underpin labor, capitalism, and urban political economy.

Neena Verma is an architect and theorist based in New York. Her research and writing focuses on the intersection of practice and society with a specific challenge to norms of perception and beauty. As a former lawyer, Nina's analyzes deal with the legal and construction professions.

Nina's work has recently appeared in Architectural Research Quarterly, and her collaborative work has been exhibited at the Association of American Law Schools, the Buenos Aires Biennale, and the Venice Biennale. She was invited to the American Institute of Architects Emerging Professionals Summit and named the AIA Center for Emerging Professionals. She completed her first architectural work as a graduate architecture student in Tulane's Urban Build program. As a recipient of a John William Lawrence Travel Fellowship, she studied the architecture of slums in India.

Nina is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, The Wharton School, Rutgers Law School and Tulane School of Architecture. She is currently adjunct faculty at NJIT's College of Architecture and Design and director of her eponymous practice. He is working on a book about finding a place for immigrants.

Jesse Keenan is a member of the Faculty of Architecture at the Graduate School of Design, where he teaches professional practice courses and conducts research at the intersection of climate adaptation and the built environment, including aspects of design, engineering, regulation and finance. Jesse has worked with a variety of global stakeholders including AIA, Audi, Carnegie Corporation, EPA, Goldman Sachs, Google, ICC, MoMA, Mori Foundation, Lennar Foundation, NASA, National Security Council, NIST, Open Society Foundation, Regional Plan Association. , the RAND Corporation, the Rockefeller Foundation, the White House, and the United Nations. Jesse is co-editor of NYC 2040: Housing the Next One Million New Yorkers (Columbia University Press) and Blue Dunes: Design by Climate Change (Columbia University Press) and Adapting to Climate Change in North America: Experiences, Case Studies and Best Practices (Springer) . . Jesse's forthcoming book, Climate Adaptation Finance and Investments in California (Routledge), will be published in November. Keenan was simultaneously a research advisor to California Governor Jerry Brown and a visiting fellow at the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco. Jesse holds degrees in Law (J.D., LL.M.) and Built Environment Sciences (M.Sc.), including a Ph.D. from Delft University of Technology.

John T. Dunlop is design critic at Alison Brooks Architecture and principal and creative director of London-based Alison Brooks Architects. One of the leading architects of her generation, named by Debret as one of the 500 most influential British architects in 2012, Alison has built an international reputation for award-winning work since establishing her practice in 1996. Its construction style. Each of her projects is based on extensive cultural research and expresses a specific response to place, community and landscape. Winner of the RIBA Stirling Prize, Manser Medal and Stephen Lawrence Award, she is the only British architect to have won all three prizes, and in 2017 she was named Royal Designer for Industry by the RSA and elected Mayor of London. Alison graduated from the University of Waterloo, where she also received an honorary doctorate in engineering in 2016. She has taught at AA, Bartlett UCL and most recently at ETSAM Madrid for Masters in Collective Housing. Her practice is currently on display at the Venice Architecture Biennale 2018.

This panel will focus on the tangible and intangible resources available to designers in practice, focusing on the ways in which the incorporation of new technologies and strategies can impact design. As many digital platforms, BIM and machine learning programs are now commonplace in the design process, new opportunities are emerging with the development of digital simulation, geospatial representation and manufacturing technologies for the built environment. Panelists will discuss new technologies from early R&D to commercial and professional use, critically examining the gap between potential opportunities and actual feasibility in using new design tools.

Inclement Weather Procedures

Panelists will focus on both data-driven analysis and design collaboration, and will address the increasingly multidisciplinary nature of design in light of new technologies, as well as the risks and opportunities associated with increasing automation in practice. The panel examines the ways in which various technological tools and strategies influence design practice and explores new ways of interaction and accountability within the design professions.

Edward Sancho Pau is a registered architect in New York and Barcelona, ​​specializing in strategic consulting, planning and management of projects of all sizes. His academic profile is based on his diverse work experience, including the position of strategic director of a private real estate company in New York (New Amsterdam Design Associates), project development as an operational manager of urban projects for the city of Buenos Aires, managing an architectural gallery in Barcelona with Aedes Berlin and an international architecture with the Swiss multinational company Developing Holcim Awards.

Edward studied architecture and civil engineering and received his doctorate from UPC. He is the recipient of a grant from the Graham Foundation and a Theory Award for Research in Architectural Practice from the Festival of Art and Design (FAD).

Sawako Kaijima is an assistant professor of architecture at the Harvard Radcliffe Institute and a Shutzer assistant. Her work combines architectural, structural and environmental knowledge to create unique, efficient and previously unattainable designs. In pursuit of this goal, he develops computational design methods and artifacts using computer simulation and various digital fabrication technologies. Her work has been widely published, exhibited and won multiple design awards. In academic and applied research at the intersection of architecture, engineering and computing, Sawako has led multiple interdisciplinary research projects in collaboration with fields ranging from construction, aerospace, material science to art.
