"Since the attempt that was made regarding the transmission of results to the Results Display Portal (IREC)," Yakubu said, "the commission has the capacity to transmit results electronically.

"From the test we did in uploading the results to the IREC portal, we have covered all parts of Nigeria and we have no problem in remote or urban areas.
"This has given us confidence that we can deliver election results just by uploading polling station results from over 176,000 locations across the country." So the pilot project encouraged us that we can deliver the results from the polling stations."

On whether INEC will punish errant candidates who started campaigning before the deadline, the chairman said: "It is not just a matter of the Electoral Act, it is a constitutional provision that there is a deadline to start campaigning… that it is 150 days to the election, and there is also a 24-hour period until the elections.

"Let me use this opportunity to inform parties and candidates that the law makes specific provisions on the commencement and termination of campaigns and that all Nigerians are bound to abide by the provisions of the law, including parties and candidates.

Presidential Nomination Form Pegged At N100m As Apc Releases Primary Election Timetable
However, the commission could not release the detailed timetable and schedule for the general election, as it usually does, until the Electoral Act is passed in 2022. The bill has already been signed.

"Therefore, the Electoral Act 2022 together with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) form the legal basis for the conduct of all elections in Nigeria. In particular, the Election Law establishes strict deadlines for the conduct of elections. One of the important deadlines is the publication of the announcement of elections no later than 360 days before the election date, which has already passed for the 2023 elections.
"Consequently, the Commission has decided to adjust the dates of the 2023 general elections to ensure compliance with the provisions of the new law.

According to him, "all political parties should respect the existing legal framework, ensure proper organization and implementation of party elections and nominate qualified candidates to avoid unnecessary disputes."
