After New Mexico's 2022 legislative session, Alamogordo Public Schools found they could opt in or out of extended learning time and K5+ programs, said Alamogordo Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning Pamela Renteria.

"The decision of the calendar committee here on the advice of (APS Superintendent) Dr. (Kenneth) Moore was that we will not be participating in (Extended Instructional Time or K5+) this year," Renteria said.

K5+ is a program that allows students to voluntarily start school a few weeks early to get a head start.
Extended Learning Time, or ELT, added 10 days to the school calendar as a means of closing learning gaps.
Kindergarteners, sixth graders and first graders will start school a day before their peers as they will start in a new school building.

"We wanted (the students) to have a great transition day, a very important day for these students: going to a new school, a new environment, getting familiar with schedules," Renteria said. "We really wanted them to feel special that day and be able to do that acclimatization without a lot of other people around."
Kindergarten, sixth graders and freshmen begin on Thursday, August 11th and end on May 25th, and all others, including preschoolers, begin on August 12th and end on May 26th.
"We've approved the calendar and appreciate going back to starting in August and ending before Memorial Day," Holbeck said. "We also think that starting the transition years early is a great idea to ease these students into the new settings."
Aberdeen Public School District
The 2021-2022 school calendar called for students to begin on August 6, with the last day of school on May 27.

The poll is open until October 30. It asks if a later or earlier start to the school year is preferred and if the community has other suggestions for the school system to consider.

According to the proposed calendar, winter break will begin on December 20 and students will return to class on January 3. Spring break will be the school week of April 11th through April 15th.
The school year will resume later in June to add not only the new vacations, but also two full days of parent-teacher conferences for parents with elementary school-age children, according to the school system.
The school system said it wants to align itself with other neighboring jurisdictions because 52 percent of its employees work outside of Arlington County.

The committee reviewing the calendar meets on November 2. The principal is expected to propose a calendar to the school board on Nov. 17, and a vote could come from the board on Dec. 3.
