Usd 497 Calendar 2023 – After receiving the support of families and GPS staff, Gilbert Public Schools will transition to a new academic calendar beginning in the 2022-2023 school year. The new calendar means students and staff have two weeks off for fall, winter and spring break. The Board of Directors adopted the new calendar in February 2021, after a review and the GPS family and staff supported the changes.
The academic year begins eight calendar days before the current academic year, with the first full day of classes beginning on July 26, 2022. The earlier start ensures that students are given more opportunities for enrichment activities and involvement in education as necessary. Teachers on our campus will receive professional development training according to the next school calendar. Although the fall and spring breaks are extended, care is taken to ensure that there is no interruption in the learning environment.

Gilbert Public Schools will now operate on the same schedule as neighboring districts, including Chandler USD, Higley USD, and Queen Creek USD. GPS students and staff will continue through Thanksgiving break, with a shorter spring break. The holidays make it easier for families to spend time together and plan trips. For families concerned about child care needs, Gilbert Public Schools continues to offer enrichment programs, youth sports, and summer camps.

At the elementary level, there are plans for the beginning of the school year, when the summer heat can be a problem on some days and holidays outside. If there is a summer advisory day, GPS Elementary students will be inside providing soccer games, videos, and other activities to keep you occupied during recess. Schools determine appropriate activities based on student needs.
The new school calendar moves GPS high school sports to four seasons, allowing each school to add boys volleyball to its sports title. There will also be an expansion of boys and girls sports for seventh and eighth graders. The junior season will last nine weeks, including games, and some schedule changes are expected. Opportunities to promote player development will also be provided through Gilbert Youth Athletics. The 2022-2023 schedule is now available online. GPS athletes and families with questions about the impact of the calendar on Junior High sports can contact their school's athletic director. The Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) will continue to govern GPS high school athletics.
The new changes to the calendar will also be effective for the 2023-2024 school year. The first full day of school for this school year will be July 25, 2023.
