WASHINGTON, DC, April 27, 2022 – The Aspen Institute today announced the 25 semifinalists for the Aspen Community College Excellence Award, adding another step to the award process. The $1 million Aspen Award is the nation's signature award for community colleges that achieve high-achieving, progressive and equitable student outcomes. In recent years, only ten people have been recognized on their way to winning, and this change should reflect the growing number of universities across the country that are doing a good job.

Every two years, the Aspen Awards honor institutions of higher education that excel in five key areas: teaching and learning, graduate and undergraduate, graduate and undergraduate, workforce success, and equitable outcomes for students of color. and minority students. The winner will be announced in spring 2023.

The award selection process began last October, when the Aspen Institute invited 150 community colleges to apply, based on data showing student strength and progress in key areas such as retention, graduation, transfer and equity. The applications went to a separate selection committee of 16 academic experts who reviewed the extensive information and stories.

Dr. John Hartog, president of Northwest Iowa Community College, explained: "NCC is one of 150 colleges and universities that have been nominated for the Aspen Award seven times since the competition began (2011, 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2021, and 2023). ). This ranks NCC among the top performing community colleges in the country."

As a result, NCC was awarded as one of the 25 semi-finalist universities in the 2023 Aspen Awards competition.

"We are proud to see America's best colleges and universities with purpose, educating people of all backgrounds and preparing them for successful careers," said Josh Wyner, executive director of the Aspen Institute's College Excellence Program. Graduation rates have increased by more than six percent for all students since 2015 and five percent for students of color, he said.
