Since much of the new money comes into the school system and is spent at some point, we want to make sure HCPSS uses the money wisely. We conducted an internal audit.

Celebration: ● This year's Merrill Teacher of the Year honorees include Samuel Pollack, a GT math teacher at Rockburn Elementary School who years ago taught fourth- and fifth-grade GT math to UMD Merrill student William Gerst. ● Later, Paula Roberts, a math teacher at Howard High School, was recognized by her former student, Eunice Brymo. ● Two Atholton High School teachers are being honored: GT teacher Lynette Burns and her former student, Allie Merwitz. ● Another Atholton award winner is Jennifer Street, world language teacher and leadership team leader, and her former student Selina Sen. Covid Update: I have an update on our school health metrics. Yesterday, December 6, our seven-day total of COVID-19 cases in schools was 95 and we had 1,172 students and 31 staff in isolation. We currently have 16 active outbreaks; Please note that this number is not displayed on the Maryland Department of Health website due to a recent hack. We have 58 students who were identified as close contacts and then tested positive during 14 days of self-quarantine. Overall, our numbers are similar to what I reported on November 18th. As of Friday, December 3, 85.2% of Howard County 12-17 year olds were fully vaccinated and 92.6% had received their first dose. . It is also encouraging that 37.4%, or approximately 12,000 children received the first dose between the ages of 5-11. Our current protocol, which requires indoor coverage for all students, staff and community members regardless of immunization status, will not change at this time. Tents: All tents are now removed in order of the school's ability to use them, which is the same as how they were set up. They will be removed from each elementary school by the beginning of March 2022, based on time, staffing efforts, and hiring Howard High School's special education statement: I will not remove students who receive special education services from their classrooms or school, or reduce . or eliminate special education. services Movement:

HCPSS Commitment to Incentive Payments for All Bus Drivers, Employees and Contractors HCPSS has committed to an incentive payment of $5,000 for all bus drivers and attendants; Up to $4,000 in incentive payments for newly hired drivers; Up to $3,000 for bus contractors to fill inactive routes
The Howard County Board of Education took action today to address the bus driver shortage that has plagued HCPSS since the start of the school year. The board approved amendments to transportation contracts to provide financial incentives to school bus drivers and attendants. This project would not be possible without a $2 million commitment from County Executive Calvin Ball. The remaining costs will be included in the transportation savings in the HCPSS budget. Additional funding will be provided to:

The school system wants to help bus drivers during this difficult time by putting this money directly into their pockets. An initial $2,500 incentive bonus for current bus drivers and custodians will be awarded to all bus contractors within ten days of implementing the amended contracts, with the remaining $2,500 paid monthly at the end of the school year.
Hoco Apfo: May 2017
The Howard County Public School System contracts its bus services to several local vendors who distribute bonuses to their employees, and HCPSS is required to provide assurance that bus drivers and supervisors receive their payments on time.

While these short-term financial incentives are necessary to remain competitive as many other districts explore similar incentives, the long-term sustainability of transportation operations will require more strategies. HCPSS will work with bus contractors to explore options to increase bus driver pay and benefits to help recruit and retain high-quality bus drivers.
Since the start of the school year, HCPSS has experienced a shortage of approximately 95 bus drivers. Traffic jams require two bus routes, causing many students to arrive at school early or stay late at the end of the school day, creating significant challenges and disruptions for drivers, families and school staff. Addressing the bus driver shortage will require a sustained and multifaceted effort. HCPSS has implemented several outreach initiatives, including recent job fairs, to attract new drivers and workers to other areas with shortages, and will continue to work with bus contractors to alleviate the driver shortage.
