However, the 300-acre park-like campus, once home to the Nisenan, Patwin, Miwok, Wintu and Maidu Native American tribes, is more than a major center for higher education. Its physical presence also resembles important landmarks such as the Guy West Bridge, the Planetarium, the SACRAMENTO Mural, but also less obvious public gems.

A clear reminder of the presence of Native Americans forms part of the main four; a marker showing where the iconic Pony Express riders stood on their transcontinental run; The quiet tea room and garden are cultural touchstones, as the rose garden provides year-round color and sweet fragrance to holidaymakers in spring and early summer; And nearby, the university's Julia Morgan House has architectural grandeur and historical significance.
The following examples of lesser-known treasures (listed in no particular order)—and some great ones—are an invitation to experience Sac State in the details that allow a university to be a university in addition to thousands of educations. It is an important part of the cultural fabric of the city and region.
