Mcla Calendar 2023-2024 – The Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts announced Thursday that it will undertake a multi-pronged effort to overhaul its athletic department.

MCLA, home of the Trailblazers, said the new multi-year plan includes major facility upgrades as well as the return of ice hockey to North Adams College.

"Our vision here is three, two, one: all of our student-athletes achieve and maintain a 3.0 GPA, all of our teams compete for the top two spots in the conference, and everyone works together as a team, and so, really, the college is for it. Very supportive and really wants to enhance the student-athlete experience," said MCLA Director of Athletics Laura Mooney. "We are Division III, which means we don't offer any athletic scholarships, but there are academic scholarships. Scholarships are available throughout the college. So the main difference between us and other departments is that there is no athletic scholarship money."

With the college suspending its tennis program due to "decreasing interest," MCLA will sponsor 12 teams in 2022 and 2023.

For the 2023–2024 academic year, both men's and women's ice hockey teams will be added to the roster. For the men's team, it's a return after putting the program on ice following the 2002-2003 school year. For the women's team, this is the first MCLA.

"I think it will probably bring in some dual-sport players, maybe with men's lacrosse, mostly on the men's side," Mooney said. "This will be an exciting team to bring back to campus and add to our existing culture."

The most recent addition before ice hockey was men's lacrosse just before the pandemic. Mooney explains how his department is successfully building a new team from scratch.

"We basically hire a coach a year in advance, then he spends the whole year going out there, traveling, recruiting, making connections, local high schools, hockey clubs, with anyone and potentially. Spending with whoever goes. With us. go. to prospective student-athletes," he said. "So this first year it's going to be a lot of work for the coaches to get enough student-athletes here so we can compete next year. So in between, we're going to get uniforms and gear and stuff like that along the way. But the number one goal and priority is student-athlete.

North Adams has memories of successful MCLA men's ice hockey campaigns in the late 90s and early 00s. The team qualified for the conference tournament in each of its final four seasons and peaked with a third-place finish in the conference in the 2000–2001 season.

"There were a lot of students who connected with the college and were really supportive of the idea of ​​bringing it back," Mooney said. "We've had a lot of conversations — I think, in my last seven years here, I've come into town just to eat, and people come up to me and say, hey, when are we bringing hockey back? ? So there was a thirst to bring the game back."

Mooney couldn't be more excited about the new college project his department is working on.

Next summer, MCLA will resurrect its main arena, which was first installed in 2007. The college said it will also launch a fundraising campaign to boost its baseball and softball fields.

"For the new turf facility in soccer and lacrosse, Shawcraft Field and then the main fields for baseball and softball, the entire complex will look completely different, all as a synthetic turf facility," Mooney said.
