Berkeley Academic Calendar Spring 2023 – The National Gallery of Art Fine Arts Research Center (Center) announces admissions for the 2022-2023 academic year.

Washington, DC – The Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts (Center), an internationally recognized research institution that brings together the world's leading scholars to the National Gallery of Art, has announced its appointments for the 2022-2023 academic year. To them H. Perry Chapman of the University of Delaware (Emerita) as Professor Kress-Beinecke, Adriana Zavala of Tufts University as Professor Andrew W. Mellon and Gail Feigenbaum as visiting professor Edmond J. Bile is included. Steven D. Houston from Brown University in 2023. in the spring of the 72nd Art Lectures A.W. Mellon will.

In addition to this list of appointees, eight seniors and nine visiting seniors have been appointed to the center, as well as two National Gallery of Art Fellows, two postdoctoral fellows, six predoctoral fellows, and one additional predoctoral fellow in residence, 12 non-tenured. resident fellows and four American art historians who received fellowships for trips abroad.

National Gallery Of Art's Center For Advanced Study In The Visual Arts (the Center) Announces 2022–2023 Academic Year Appointments

"This year's inductees represent the future of art history scholarship in one of our largest classes on record," said Stephen Nelson, dean of the center. "Their research will increase our collective understanding of art history, which has traditionally been understudied."

Research topics range from the impact of immigrants on American architecture to gender roles in contemporary Native American art. Permanent members of the center will benefit from the study center's offices in the east building of the National Gallery and the resources of the National Gallery of Art Library.

Since its establishment in 1979, the center promotes the study of history, theory and criticism of art, architecture and urban planning, and forms a community of scientists. A number of private sources support the scholarship program, and appointments are approved by the National Gallery's Board of Trustees. In recruiting its members, the Center seeks a range of researchers in the field of visual arts.

The Center currently supports the Kress-Beineke Professorship, a one-year appointment as an Honorary Fellow; Professor Andrew W. Mellon, a two-year midterm fellow appointment; and Edmond J. Safra, visiting professor, three to six months to stimulate research on topics related to the permanent collection of the National Gallery. In addition to a variety of senior internships, visiting senior internships, postdoctoral internships, and predoctoral internships, the Center's 2020 Leonard A. Lauder was launched to support scholars studying historically limited areas of art history study. The Advisory Board, composed of seven or eight art historians appointed on a rotating basis, is the selection committee that reviews all applications for fellowships.

In 1949, the National Gallery began the A. W. Mellon Lectures in Fine Arts to bring the best of contemporary thought and art to the public of the United States. The program, now sponsored by the center, is named after National Gallery founder Andrew W. Mellon is named after giving the nation his art collection and funds for the construction of the West Building, which opened to the public in 1941.

The Center publishes its symposium proceedings as Proceedings of the National Symposium Series for the Study of Art History, as well as seminar papers. Both series are available in store. Study volumes from art history symposia published over five years ago are available for download from JSTOR. The Center's annual report, published each fall, summarizes the previous year's research and activities. The entire archive is available for free on the National Gallery website.
