Arapahoe Holbrook Public Schools
The Yakima School Board on Tuesday approved the calendar for the upcoming school year with start and end dates similar to this year's.
With a start date at the end of August, an end date in mid-June and an eight-week summer break, the new schedule is similar to that used this year. The new calendar gives students and staff a week off until Thanksgiving instead of three days.
It includes two possible week breaks in February and March, just like the last calendar. Alternatively, electives will be offered between sessions to enrich students. Students can come in for extra work or take a week off during winter and spring break.
Harrah Public Schools
The calendar was developed by a committee of representatives from the district and the Yakima Education Association. When it was announced on January 18, board members indicated that more significant changes were needed.
Feedback gathered from various community groups, including students, families and staff, suggests a lack of enthusiasm for major changes to the calendar, especially during the stressful pandemic.
The vote on February 15, 2022 was 4-0 in favor with Board Chair Martha Rice absent due to ill health.

Several board members said they would be interested in a more flexible calendar in the coming years, but have heard comments from the community that students, families and staff are not interested in major changes at this time.
"We've had a lot of pressure on our students and our staff over the past two years, and I don't think it's necessarily productive to make big changes next year," said board member Norm Walker.
Before the vote, board member Ryan Beckett, who joined the board in late December, said he would consider adopting a calendar as used for 2021-22.

However, Chief Constable Trevor Green said the proposed scheme had to be rejected in principle. School district attorney Robert Noe said the district's collective bargaining agreement with the Yakima Education Association does not include a reservation if the board rejects the proposed plan.
Changed calendars are a hot topic in the state, with local districts and Washington looking at them as potential solutions to global student loss. Changed calendars may vary. Some are shortening summer vacations and giving students and staff shorter and more frequent breaks during the school year. Advocates say the system reduces learning loss after the summer, which is especially true for low-income students.
Walker said he has been interested in them for a long time and asked the calendar committee to seriously consider it for the 2023-24 school year. He said a balanced calendar is a possible tool to improve academic performance among Yakima students.
Yakima School Board Approves Calendar For Next Academic Year
Extra classes during breaks between sessions is another possible method to catch up with struggling students, but board member Raymond Navarro questioned the effectiveness of electives.
Frances Guerrero, a member of the calendar committee and a teacher at Eisenhower Middle School, said if the board wants to move to a changed calendar, it needs to spend time building community support.
"The staff of this county will not support any calendar that is not approved by the community," he said. "So if you want to move in a certain direction because you think it's going to benefit our students, you absolutely, 100 percent need to engage and inform the community." Thanks for another successful school year. Each year it is amazing to see the growth of our students socially, behaviorally and academically. When I look back over the past school year, I am especially proud of our students. Our children have made great strides in growth and achievement. They have adapted to full training with and without a mask! We are proud of our many achievements this year. A steering group led by Lisa Bartheld collected hundreds of pounds of food for our local food pantry. They also continued our recycling program and were always willing to offer their support in delivering lunch boxes to classrooms. Our third graders have made great friends with their kindergarten friends. Each student enjoyed spending time with their partner. We hope that these friendships will be rekindled during your first year.

I would like to give special thanks to two of our retired teachers: Carly Davis and Lisa Gaul. Together for over sixty years, they have created a special relationship with many young lives. They worked extremely hard and never came to "work". They came to school every day, ready to make a difference in students' lives. Thank you and we will miss you very much. Enjoy your retirement. Congratulations to our fifth graders, class of 2029! As we explained at our year-end conference, if you become Jaguar East Valley, you will forever be in our hearts as Jaguar E.V. It is our hope that the students will continue to display the heroic qualities they had while at East Valley Elementary.

On long summer days, when you're commuting, waiting for the next baseball game, or sitting on a blanket under a tree, find time to read. Avoid the "summer slump" by reading for thirty minutes every day. Your child will be ready for another successful year by the time September rolls around. We are waiting for you in August. Our office opens on August 16th, Open House/BBQ will be on August 24th and school starts on August 30th. See you later!
