FARMINGTON — Nine professors at the University of Maine at Farmington learned Monday, May 2, that their positions have been terminated.

Margaret Nagle, interim director of communications for the UMaine system, confirmed the openings. He said that everything was done in the fields of humanities and social sciences.

Officials at the University of Maine system declined to confirm which departments saw the layoffs "for personnel reasons."

But according to many teachers, including writing teacher Gretchen Legler, the layoffs eliminated all staff in the women's and gender studies program, the art/religion department and the language arts department.
"They solved the problem by simply shutting down … shutting down the software," Legler said. "We have these great programs, programs that define human behavior and liberal practices, and they're gone."

Another employee, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of harming a retired faculty member, said three faculty positions had been eliminated in the departments of geography, history and psychology.
Downsizing is defined as a way to cut costs and save money, i.e. reducing staff. Typically, it involves terminating an employee's employment rather than terminating or dismissing them while keeping them standing with the company. Depending on the situation, retired employees may lose their jobs or, if appropriate, have the opportunity to apply for an open position in another department.
In addition to studies, senior Carly Jacklin says faculty members have left mentors for the Jewish Student Union, the Queer Student Union and the women's magazine "Ripple"; lead a backpacking trip to Spain; and the campus resource for InterVarsity Christian Fellowship.

Several teachers who spoke to the Franklin Journal said the only black faculty member on campus was reinstated.

Nagle said financial and recruiting issues at UMF were the reason the nine faculty members were "terminating or absent."
Nagle added that nine UMF faculty members "have chosen to leave voluntarily" as part of a move to "close the $5 million budget."

Announcing the hiring of interim president Joseph McDonnell, Chancellor Dannel Malloy described the termination as an effort to "reframe the foundation of this university in terms of student numbers."
Malloy and other communications from the UMaine system indicated that a recovery process is underway for these teachers to find new positions within the system.

"We're working hard to see (the college) stay here in Maine and if they have a job, get it," Malloy said.

The Franklin Journal spoke with five teachers — three of whom were fired. Some faculty members asked to remain anonymous out of concern for their job security — whether they are on sabbatical or long-term at UMF.

Most of the nine faculty members who have been at the university for a year or two are still recovering from the shock — and so is the UMF faculty community.
Before informing staff in an email on Monday, May 2, faculty members described communication between senior management and teachers as "unfamiliar and unrecognizable," a professor said. No delay

Legler said it was like an "ultimatum" — "'You're the people who deserve to retire, and if you don't retire, your younger colleagues will lose their jobs,'" he said.
An unnamed academic said his position was known about the university's financial problems, but "we don't know how big and how big the problem is".

Ann Kennedy, a senior faculty member in the gender studies department, has been laid off as a result of losing her job, despite filling all her classes this term.

Several professors said most communications at the University of Maine are about teacher union representatives.

"Everyone knows this is a big marketing trend coming. That's the day," said the teacher.
On April 29, outgoing faculty members said they received emails asking to meet with Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Eric Brown.

Many met with Brown on Monday and learned their positions had been terminated. New positions in the UMaine system will be encouraged.
The non-teaching councilor said after the professor said, "We don't know the reason" and has now announced his resignation.

"I didn't see any report from the administration on how much the retired faculty member (opened) costs. They usually say, 'We have an enrollment problem; we're worried about enrollment.' But there is no hard data about their elective programs or faculty members.

"The society did not tell us that these are the people who lost their jobs," said the anonymous dean. "It said 'we lost people'."
Teachers are disappointed to see layoffs amid major changes at UMF.
UMF's student newspaper, the Farmington Flyer, reported that "UMF will implement a new curriculum and credit system in the fall of 2023… to align UMF's tuition system with other schools at the University of Maine… (a) facilitate transfer Students to UMF. ."

One retired professor, who wished to remain anonymous, said preparing for the credit transfer was like "a part-time job on top of our full-time job."
"We tried to do everything they asked us to change … in the middle of an epidemic … and it just wasn't enough," said Kennedy, a Women's and Men's School faculty member. "It's been a very important year for everyone at UMF. And this is the second most important year. "

Kennedy said there was no recognition from the administration of the efforts teachers and staff made to prepare for the change and guide students.
Employment And Opportunities
Administrators say the decision to eliminate the nine positions is to fill gaps in a $5 million funding shortfall.

"I think the solution is to monetize and support the liberal arts," he said. "There are all kinds of creative ways to make money."
A faculty member who did not leave felt that the "termination style" was inconsistent with the school's goals and was not "effective."

Kennedy marvels that her Introduction to Women's and Gender Studies and Introduction to LGBTBQ+ Studies classes "continue to expand."
"I think money is the only factor … I think a lot of people think that," Legler said.

It may be part of a larger trend by the government that the university is shedding staff from humanities and social science departments.

"Over 1,500 US school districts have banned books in the past nine months," the Guardian reported in April.

"At least 36 states have passed or enacted laws or policies restricting the teaching of race and racism," Chalkbeat reported in February. Opponents are implementing "Don't Talk Gay" bills that critics say would prohibit educators from teaching LGBTQ+ topics in K-12 schools in several states.
In the wake of what they see as censorship of K-12 schools, teachers across the country are expressing concern about how universities on the list are publicly funded.

Nationally, there is also more concern about resistance and efforts to destroy traditional activities in higher education than in previous years. Experts question whether the liberal arts will "survive" in the 21st century; They see a shift in majors to "work-oriented" programs such as STEM and business.
Legler believes the university's current president, Edward Sarna, tried to "stop marketing (UMF) as a public liberal arts institution" during his tenure.

Maine state Rep. Scott Landry, D-Farmington, expressed skepticism about the shift between lower tuition and increased interest in community colleges.

"I think you (UMF administration) will try to get back to their core education, teaching," Landry said. "That's Farmington. It was a normal school when my grandmother went there around 1920.

But Legler, Kennedy and up-and-comer Annie Newman say offering liberal arts degrees is critical for public schools in rural areas like UMF.
"UMF has amazing students from disadvantaged backgrounds who receive the highest quality liberal arts education at an affordable price," Legler said. "Where are they going to get that education? They need a public liberal arts institution to provide that. They can't go to Colby or Bates.
