According to a press release, the official calendar begins classes on August 10 and ends on May 25, just before Memorial Day. It allows nine weeks of summer vacation for teachers and 10 ½ weeks for students.

The calendar allocates five staff development days before school starts and 4 ½ staff development days during the school year.

The holiday season remains traditional, with one week of Thanksgiving vacation, two weeks of winter break, and one week of spring break. Spring break will be changed in many school districts in the area.
To meet the requirements of the Texas Education Agency, 175 days of student education and 187 days of teacher union are scheduled with a minimum of 75,600 minutes.
When school is canceled due to weather, the calendar allows for 1,185 extra minutes, more than the 840 minutes required by the TEA. February 20 and April 10 will serve as additional days for seasonal production.

The calendar includes a one-week Thanksgiving break, two winter weeks, and one spring break. Students and staff will be closed on Labor Day, MLK Day, Chavez-Hurta Day and Memorial Day. HISD also has a break on October 5th and two spring breaks on April 7th and 21st.
Trustees approved a grant from the Texas Education Agency to support after-school education. $882,500 came from Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) III funds that will be used to accelerate student learning due to COVID-19. The dollars provide support in three areas: high-quality after-school staff, technical support for after-school design and implementation, and effective guidance for the after-school program.
District And High School Calendar
Trustees approved a $100,000 gift from the US Soccer Foundation to the M.C. Williams MS. The donation was made through the Play and Safe Places to Play foundation. Materials and equipment include a mini-pitch system design with LED lighting bars, playing walls, built-in goals, storage, seating, polycarbonate signs, ADA-accessible gates, an acrylic mini-pitch surface with playing lines. The board also accepted a donation from Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church. The church will donate $30,000 each to Blackshear ES, Cullen MS, Lawson MS and Yates HS. The purpose of the donation is to help students who need help in the school's help room. Donations include clothing, toiletries and subway passes.
