Since ancient times, color coding has helped people understand basic concepts. The Show-Me Institute is using this idea to interpret educational data for school districts that may be too complex to capture without extensive research.

A notable area is Avenue City R-IX, which ranked 10th out of a total of 516 in a survey released by the Show-Me Institute on July 7th. The Show-Me Institute's findings take over a year to gather data from the state. The 2021-2022 rankings will be released in the summer of 2023.

All standards are proprietary to their respective agencies, but are based on data from the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

"It's all DESE data," says Susan Pendergrass, author of the Show-Me Institute. "We've been working to make it more accessible and we hope that someday DESE itself will commit to creating a similar website. There are excellent and user-friendly websites in many government departments. Not yet at the government level."

There may be compromises in shortening. It's easy to understand the differences between regions by looking at the color codes themselves rather than the underlying data. Avenue City is much smaller than SJSD with 10,600 students, about 200 students. And no high school. 8th grade students can transfer to SJSD, Savannah or enroll in a private/regular school or home school.

"It's really exciting for me as a researcher," Pendergrass said. "The first thing I did on this website was color coded green, the best school was green, the worst school was red, then orange and light green. If you look at the map, you can go like this. 'Wow, it already looks geographically. .'

However, access to digestible summaries and standards is often desirable in situations where public school families must send their children to their school district.

"Someone might be thinking of moving to a rural area, or they might want to look at this map and choose a green area instead of an orange one," Pendergrass said. "So that's why it's so important. DESE's mission is to identify the bottom 5% of school districts in the state and work with them to improve them. But what about the school districts in the middle? It may not be the bottom." But who still needs help? It's important to know that."
