The principles and philosophies that run through the University begin with our name, Roger Williams. As the founder of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, Roger Williams was the first major figure in colonial America to strongly advocate democracy, religious freedom, and understanding of Native American culture.
Forest House, Sutomore
At Roger Williams University today, his legacy lives on. Through his academic achievements in languages, theology and law, Williams lived a life that demonstrated the value of learning and teaching. The university honors his legacy by fostering a community in which diverse people and diverse ideas are valued, intellectual achievement is celebrated, and civic responsibility is expected.

In the classroom and in the community, RWU fosters a lifelong love of learning, where students explore their academic interests through traditional and project-based learning and foster free expression with the support of dedicated faculty. With its strong academic foundation, the university has increased its value to students across all disciplines through the Affordable Excellence initiative launched in 2012 as a direct response to key issues facing higher education in the 21st century: rising costs, rising graduate debt. And the work readiness of graduates.
With its current strengths and history of excellence, Roger Williams University is poised to continue its legacy of achievement and excellence as we move into the 21st century.
