During a webinar held Tuesday, March 15, OSD Superintendent Patrick Murphy revealed the school's investigation into expanding the school day throughout the year.

In his presentation, Murphy cited research showing how students who study during the summer break lost an average of 2.6 months of math skills that teachers should be brushing up on instead of introducing new lessons. The effect is more pronounced as children get older, he added.

Adopting a balanced calendar can also help close the gap caused by economic status, according to promoters. Murphy reports that low-income students fall 2.5 to three years behind in fifth grade because they fall behind two to three months each summer, compared to middle-income students who are able to keep up during recess.

One of the meeting's speakers, Megan Moreno, a teacher from Olympia who grew up in balanced-calendar San Francisco Bay Area schools, explained that she had a local student who would ask for extra supplies she received on long weekends.

"Not only does the school give them free breakfast and free lunch with extra food, but the teachers and their teachers also provide them with intellectual enrichment and emotional nurturing," Morena said.

Another benefit presented by a balanced calendar is that students can have more time to catch up on school work, use breaks to provide extra lessons and opportunities to catch up on their studies.

"We have a transition period that we can actually do in time, help with support, even some remedial measures to help students get back on track," Murphy said.
