Mizzou Academic Calendar Fall 2023 – Proposals for next year's Springfield school calendar call for a full week off for all students and staff on Thanksgiving and the last days of classes in May.

For many years, including this one, the district only dropped classes on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday of Thanksgiving, and the last day of class each year was a question mark until spring.

Information about the 2022-23 calendar was presented to the school board on Tuesday, which would decide to accept or reject it.

Mr. Jason "J" Anderson, Executive Director of Basic Education, noted that this recommendation was made through comments from teachers, parents, principals and principals, and higher education officials.

The first day of class is August 22, the first date allowed by Missouri's 2019 law, which prohibits districts from starting the school year more than 14 days before the first Monday of the month.

"This has nothing to do with learning and learning," Anderson said, noting that the primary policies are driven by the tourism industry.

He said that because of the late start and the long process of ending the fall semester in late December instead of early January, the fall semester has 80 days and the spring semester 92 days.

Anderson says that even a short fall semester isn't ideal, graduating in late December is the best option because of the number of high school students enrolled in dual credit and extra courses at Ozarks Technical Community College and Missouri State University.

"We have a lot of our high school students who have to finish the (fall) semester before winter," he said.

Board members asked questions and expressed concern about the results of a slightly dull semester. Anderson said he heard the same from a teacher.

"This is an ongoing issue," he said. "That's why we have to … continue to advocate for local government when the school calendar starts to come back to us."

This year, the district must create a calendar to meet the minimum school hours: 1,044.

"We exceeded that in our primary, middle and high schools – we ran more than 1,100 hours," he said.

In addition to the holidays around Thanksgiving and Christmas, the district suspended classes for Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Labor Day. President's Day and Memorial Day.

For the next school year, in keeping with previous practices, the district instituted an indefinite summer break.

"Most of our friends have accepted it, our neighbors, but some haven't," Anderson said. "And when you share families or students or teachers or staff, sometimes it's a little difficult. So we're always respectful."

Spring break is scheduled for March 13-17. The fourth and final term of the school year begins when students return from vacation.

Anderson said because the district uses school hours, not days to create its new calendar, no extra days are needed.
