GEORGE TOWN – Georgetown County students may get more vacation time in the future, but they could start school earlier under proposed changes to the district's academic calendar for the next two years.

District Human Resources Director Chelice Waites said at the January 18 meeting that the school board's calendar planning committee has moved some South Carolina school districts to a revised year-round plan and wants to follow suit.

The revised year still allows for an eight-week break, and students are still required to take 180 days of courses, but the days will be spread more widely throughout the year.

The main difference between the two calendars is that students take a week off each term. Traditionally, students have one week for Thanksgiving, two weeks for Christmas, and one week for Spring Break.

Students will have a week off in October, November and April, as well as the usual two weeks at Christmas in a modified year round.

Ballot And Voter Access Elections Calendar

Beginning in the 2023-24 school year, teachers will begin classes on July 26 and students will return to school on August 2. The last day of the semester is December 20 and the academic year will end on May 24.
