Many students celebrate religious holidays that are necessary to practice their faith. Due to the large number of religions represented in the state of Georgia, it is difficult to provide a complete list of all religious holidays. Some of the widely observed religious holidays for the academic year 2021-22 are listed on the link below this text.

Student Government Association

Students must give teachers reasonable notice of religious holidays for which they plan to be absent, and be given equal opportunity to make up lost work according to the scheduled schedule. Such adjustments may include rescheduling the exam or allowing the student to take a make-up test, giving an individual or group presentation on a different day, or allowing the student to sit for part of the exam. Adjust deadlines for the same class that week, or give students a related makeup assignment that is no more challenging than the original assignment.

Absence for religious reasons shall be considered an excused absence and any other excused absence approved by the instructor shall not be considered. The annual Mays Lecture encourages discussion of issues facing urban education leaders, honors the memory of Benjamin E. Mays, and further promotes his philosophy of excellence in educating society's most underserved.

In the spring of 1988, Benjamin E. Mays was approved by the Board of Trustees of the University System of Georgia as chairman of the Urban Education Leadership Council and established in the College of Education and Human Development at the University of Georgia, Georgia State University.

Health Georgia Foundation, Georgia State University School of Public Health Dr. Sponsors an annual presentation on health equity and disparities in honor of Marshall Kreuter and Mrs. Martha Katz.

Dr Kreuter has extensive experience with public participation in the planning, implementation and evaluation of public health programmes. As a professor at Georgia State, she focuses on health disparities in downtown Atlanta and how the presence or absence of social capital may relate to the effectiveness of community-based initiatives. Prior to joining the faculty at Georgia State, Dr. Kreuter was a distinguished scientist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), where he held a variety of leadership positions for two decades. During her tenure at the CDC, she worked to improve epidemiologic studies on physical activity, establish breast cancer, school health, and a planned approach to public health, and initiate research and programs focused on early detection of breast cancer.

Katz began her career in public health working in the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion at the US Department of Health and Human Services, where she was part of the development team for Developing Healthy People: A Goal for the Nation in 1980. Later, as CDC's assistant director for policy and legal, Katz advised the CDC director on complex policy issues and provided leadership for legislative initiatives, health communication programs and relations with the agency's external partners. Katz was instrumental in establishing the CDC Foundation and currently serves on the boards of the Georgia Health Foundation and the James F. and Sarah T. Fries Foundation. As health policy director for the Georgia Foundation for Health Care, he also leads the strategic deployment of resources for effective health policy in Georgia.

The Healthcare Georgia Foundation, an independent, private, governmental organization, promotes the health of all Georgians and expands access to affordable, high-quality healthcare for underserved individuals and communities.

Sponsored by the Georgia Office of State Purveyors, the Compression Lecture was created to recognize individuals who have had a major impact on the advancement of our community. Through a series of events, the university celebrates those who have made and continue to make a significant difference in the world through their work, and encourages conversations for solutions to ongoing challenges and potential ways to meet them.

The inaugural lecture was held in February 2020 and honored the "Grunt Squad" of Myra Payne Elliott, Barbara Pace Hunt and Iris Mae Welch, who argued for university desegregation in the 1950s. The speaker for the event was Dr. Maurice C. Daniels. A University of Georgia professor who described their struggles in the book Ground Crew: The Fight to End Segregation at Georgia State. The event also included a special recognition ceremony for the last surviving claimant, Miss Elliott, her family and the Hunt family (the University was unable to locate the family of the late Mrs Welch).
