Cherokee County School District Calendar 2022 2023

The Aiken County School Board approved the revised calendar for the 2023-24 school year at its Tuesday night meeting with his 6-to-1 vote, with two directors absent.

Due to the calendar change, the student's summer vacation will be shortened and he will be given two weeks off in the fall and spring. One week each semester is Restoration Week, which provides an opportunity for students in need of academic assistance to receive assistance.

According to the revised calendar for 2023-24, students will begin classes on her Tuesday, July 25, 2023. Fall break is scheduled from October 2nd to the 13th for her, and from October 2nd to the 6th for him is the week in between. Thanksgiving break is November 22-24. The student's Christmas vacation lasts from December 20, 2023 to he January 3, 2024. Spring break is from April 1st to 12th. April 1-5, 2024 is the week of Intercession. Other breaks in the proposed calendar include Labor Day on September 4, 2023. October 20th (Friday) Weather Make-up Day. Martin Luther King Jr. Day January 15th. Holidays are President's Day, Friday 16 February 2024 and Monday 19 February 2024. March 28th (Thursday) Weather make-up day. Good Friday holiday on Friday March 29, 2024.

Board member Jason Crane was the only person to vote against the calendar. During the conference, he again expressed concern about how the calendar would affect several programs, including athletics, bands and Gateway's performing arts program.

"We are concerned about the short summer impacting athletes, bands and gateways," Crane said after the meeting. I also feel that I have made a conscientious choice about this."

While supporting the concept of a modified calendar, Crane added that each semester he would be given only one two-week vacation.

At the conference, King County Superintendent Lawrence Aiken said the summer of 2023 would be difficult for bands to practice because of his camp, which is usually three weeks long. However, orchestra directors have several options.

Lawrence said contests are scheduled state by state, with many schools in South Carolina having schedules. He also recommends holding his band his camp for a week in the summer, with additional band his camps in between.

"Yes, in the summer he had three weeks of bandcamp, but what if in the summer he did one week of bandcamp with additional bandcamps in between," Lawrence said. "One in the summer and one two-week band camp in the fall. I'm just saying people have to look elsewhere and adapt to it."

As for the track and field schedule, Lawrence said the competition calendar is determined by the states, so it won't be affected as much.

"Football and other fall sports will definitely be there during that break," Lawrence said.

Another concern is how the two-week remediation will work. Crane is unsure if the two-week hiatus is serving its intended purpose, and has heard from others who feel the same way. He said he was listening to feedback from

"We were able to do 30 minutes of interventions for him every day [during the school year]," Lawrence said. "A 30-minute intervention is a good, focused intervention for students in a small group setting…if you watch 5 hours a day during the intervention time, that's 10 times a normal school day. That is, 50 times more than a normal school day in 5 days. This week of intervention could mean 50 days of intervention every 30 minutes during the school year.

"Whatever we do for these students, we plan to be successful next quarter," Lawrence said. "I think there's a lot that can be done that week. In fact, I heard from the school district a few weeks ago that a week of intervention was showing results.

As for Gateway, Laurence says he should do it in 30 days and is looking at ways to do it within 30 days. He said there are options for 20 or 25 days in the summer, five days in the fall, and five days in the fall and spring.

"After the first year, you have an extra week, which makes everything easier," Lawrence said. The week gives us a lot more flexibility in our summer schedule."

At the January 25th meeting, Board members approved the transition to the modified calendar concept, but not the actual calendar at that time.
