According to a source, the approved schedule begins on August 10 and the study ends on May 25, just before Memorial Day. Nine weeks of summer vacation are allowed for teachers and 10 and a half weeks for students.

The schedule provides five days of staff development before school starts and 4 1/2 days of staff development during the school year.

The holiday structure will remain the same, with one week for Thanksgiving break, two weeks for winter break and one week for spring break. Spring break is similar to most school districts.

To meet Texas Education Agency requirements, 175 student learning days and 187 teacher contract days are scheduled, with at least 75,600 minutes of work.

If school is canceled due to inclement weather, the schedule allows for an additional 1,185 minutes of work, more than the TEA minimum of 840 minutes. February 20 and April 10 will be weather makeup days.

*New traditional programs (majors, minors, and certificates) for the 2023-2024 calendar must be submitted by the October deadline. New projects and mixed events/groups outside of these scheduled times may be considered. New programs must be reviewed and approved by the Board of Directors. The dates of these meetings are as follows:

**March is the deadline for all other submissions in the 2023-24 calendar (submissions must be received by the submission deadline: UCC in January and GCC in February)

***Applications reviewed and approved by the April 2023 curriculum committee meeting date will be included in the AY23/24 calendar under Schedule I on October 1, 2023.

Please note that the application approval process is closed from March to May in preparation for a new approval process for the next academic year calendar. No bids will be accepted during this period. The Houston Independent School District Board of Education approved the 2022-2023 academic calendar, adding spring break in April and moving the last day of the first semester forward one month in the fall/winter quarter.

The schedule includes one week of Thanksgiving, two weeks of Thanksgiving and one week of spring break. Students and staff will be closed on Labor Day, MLK Day, Chavez-Huerta Day and Memorial Day. HISD also has a fall break on October 5th and two spring breaks on April 7th and 21st.

Trustees approved funding from the Texas Education Agency to support high-quality after-school programs. $882,500 comes from the Elementary and Secondary Emergency Relief Fund (ESSER) III and will be used to accelerate student learning after COVID-19. The grant provides support in three areas: high-quality after-school staff, technical assistance for the design and implementation of after-school activities, and high-quality instruction in after-school programs.

Trustees receive in-kind donations from the US. Soccer Foundation Award of $100,000 to M.C. Guillermo MS. The donation is made through the foundation's It's Everyone's Game and Safe Places to Play programs. Elements and materials will be incorporated into the structure of the mini system, including light poles, play walls, integrated goal posts, storage, seating, polycarbonate signage, ADA compliant doors, acrylic mini screens with play lines and approved colors and school logos.

The board also received in-kind donations from Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church. The church will donate $30,000 each to Blackshear ES, Cullen MS, Lawson MS and Yates HS. The purpose of the donation is to maintain a resource room in each school to help students in need. Gift items include clothing, toiletries and Metro cards.
