By a 6-1 vote, with two board members absent, the Aiken County Board of Education approved a revised calendar for the 2023-24 school year at its meeting Tuesday night.

With the changed calendar, students will have a shorter summer instead of two weeks off in the fall and spring. Each semester there will be a one-week tutoring week where students who need academic support will have the opportunity to receive it.

Revised 2023-24 Calendar Students will begin classes on Tuesday, July 25, 2023. Fall break is scheduled for October 2-13, with October 2-6 as media week. Thanksgiving break is November 22-24. Christmas break for students will be from 20 December to January 2023. 3, 2024. Spring break will be April 1-12, with an advisory week scheduled for April 1-5, 2024. The last day of school is Thursday, May 30, 2024.

"I'm worried that the short summer will affect athletics, band and Gateway," Kern said after the meeting. "I think the district will handle this situation, but I also feel like it's a very bad area for us. I voted with my conscience".

Crane also added that he supports the idea of ​​a flexible calendar, with only two weeks off each semester to allow him to rest.

Another concern expressed was the quality of the two-week recovery period. Crane said he doesn't believe the two-week vacation will live up to their expectations, and he's heard from others who feel the same way.
